Training gaps supervisors identify

01

Generic content

The FCA’s 2025 capital markets review highlights good practice in adapting training to the firm’s business model, risks and staff roles.

The FCA’s 2026 sanctions findings further identified training that lacked detail on staff responsibilities and indicators of sanctions evasion.

We build sessions around your business risks, staff roles and practical cases.

Internal procedures left unexplained

Our sessions incorporate your decision criteria, evidence requirements and escalation routes.

Understanding insufficiently checked

About askMLRO

Questions about AML training

Regulation 24 of the MLRs 2017, as amended, requires appropriate awareness of applicable money laundering, terrorist financing, proliferation financing and data protection law, and regular training for relevant employees and relevant agents. Written records must be maintained, with measures reflecting the business’s nature, size and risks.

Where SYSC 6.3 applies, its rules require proportionate AML systems and controls. SYSC 6.3.7G identifies appropriate employee training as part of those arrangements.

An annual refresher can form part of an effective programme. Whether it is sufficient depends on your business risks, staff responsibilities and whether participants can apply what they learn.FCA guidance emphasises relevant, current training and checking understanding. JMLSG links training content and frequency to the firm’s risk assessment and individual roles. Additional training may be needed when risks, procedures or responsibilities change, or when reviews identify learning gaps. For businesses supervised by HMRC, its guidance expects at least annual training, with more frequent training for higher risk businesses and prompt updates where needed.

Changes to risks, roles, products or procedures may require additional sessions between scheduled refreshers.
